I prefer a dog with AKC papers, but I doesn't much matter to me. There are a lot of reasons I would want an AKC dog. Valerie highlighted one of them which is knowing that they are from Yorkie parents. Stephanie has a good point about being interested in the pedigrees as it is just fun to see.
