Interesting question as I'm in the market for a new one as well.
As a rule of thumb, 2MP camera's are good for printing off photo's at the 4x6 size. Any bigger and you lose quality. I'm personally looking at a 5+ megapixel range. My last 2MP camera is a bit outdated now.
Two other things I am taking into consideration are battery life. My last camera ate the batteries.
And also the speed at which it takes the picture. I hate the cameras that flash 50 times before the picture is taken.
It will be interesting to see some of the reply's.
