Starting The first step should be knowing the standard of the breed. Second take your dog to the vet- have him checked over for any physical defects- have him updated on all vaccinations.
OK- you have read and studied the breed standard- you have been to the vet- does your dog have LP, does your dog have both testicles , does you dog have a good bite- these are some of the things you look at. You should compare your dog with the standard- how does he size up? You need to be critical and honest with your self evaluation? If all you can come up with is He is so cute and I just love him and his personality he may not be a candidate that should be used as a stud. I/M/O unless the animal has the genetic make up to contribute they should not be used- male or female. A wonderful personality but a bad topline means- to me- a pet home and no babies for you little one.
Please understand that once you start using a male for breeding he may become a stud- who walks around the house lifting his leg on anything and everything. he no longer is mild mannerd -clark kent yorkie- he has become
Superpenasuaris. The change in those hormones means a change in how he is kept in your home and can mean a big change in his manners.
Contact some breeders- does not have to be yorkies- go and watch how they breed- and what techniques they use. It just isn't hello Mr. Yorkie and Ms. Yorkie get to it. Assistance is required to make sure that neither yorkie is hurt in the process or frightened for future use.
Talk with other breeders about the contracts they use ask for a copy and read them and ask questions.
Read books about breeding- you have to understand on what days you should breed the bitch and what to look for. How many times to breed the bitch. Testing that should be done on the bitch and verification of her vaccinatons. If the gal stays with you during the breeding process do you have a safe place to keep her. What if she gets sick or gets loose while in your care.
You may have a bitch owner who knows less then you do. HMMM- you can have problems- you do not want to be the blind leading the blind. If the bitch owner has done none of her preperation- you could be breeding puppies that are carririers of some serious genetic problems.
I was talking to a young lady on the forum about this topic- she was so kind to e-mail me and I had to just laugh. I was a bad girl cause I said that pedigrees are important- want to check for line breeding-inbreeding or out crossing. Stupid me- according to this little gal- a male and female who have the same mom and dad but are out of a different breeding are not brother and sister. I'm from the midwest and if this was human's we were talking about it would be incest. Never could make her understand the babies were still brother and sister. This is just a over the top item but it is what you will run into and you have to be able to handle and know what to do. |
