It is not that bad for the males. The only side effect for mine was they were a little more tired than usual. They slept most of the day they came home but were back to normal the next day.
The surgery doesn't take that long but they will want you to drop him off early in the morning and a lot of places keep them overnight.
Consider getting blood work done (I do but not everyone feels it is necessary) and make sure the vet uses either Isoflurane or Sevoflurane to put them under.
