I just talked to her regular vet. She said it wouldn't be uncommon to sedate because they have to go pretty far in with a speculum, but she would be willing to try without. It isn't necessary now since we are giving the antibiotics but for everyone's reference it is best to sedate but it would have been nice if they offered to try without.
