So now I know that counting placentas isnt a sure thing that all is well.

Glad mama is doing better and pups are back with her and doing well also.

Yes, the mom can retain a puppy and in many cases the mom will die if not caught soon enough. That is why you should always take their temperature for a number of days after they give birth. You cannot always tell by palpating the uterus if all the puppies have passed. I was just lucky the moma was able to pass the puppy, otherwise I would have had to go immediately to the vets. Sometimes the pups will die in the uterus before delivery and infection will set in and the mom can die. Just one of downs of dog breeding.
