People either seem to love the look or hate it. I think people who are really into the breed prefer it, while the general public seems to think it's atrocious. Although I realize there is a non-aesthetic reason for why they were initially cut this way.
My parents had an Apricot toy poodle when I was a kid and I remember them having to always specify that they wanted him to have a "puppy cut" to the groomers or else they give him a poodle-cut and put bows on both ears. Everyone would joke about how pretty "she" looked.
Most people couldn't even tell he was a poodle with the puppy cut (they thought he was a mix) because they naturally associate all poodles with having the show cut. Strangers used to constantly say "He's really cute ... especially for a poodle!"
I still think Yorkies are cuter though
... no matter the hair-cut (I also prefer their temperament.)
