Default RE: LP...is there a timeline?

I have read a few of the LP threads....but I haven't been faced with it (yet) and there's just SO much information here to read all the time, that I have to sometimes limit myself. I'm wondering though, if there is a timeline, meaning that if your dog is going to have it, will it show up within a certain amount of time? Like if they're going to have it, it will exhibit itself between , say....2 months and 2 yrs old? Or is it something we will have to always be on the lookout for? I mean, obviously, you pay attention to your dog and realize when something emergent occurs, but there's "accidents" and then this....if it's something genetic or congenital, would it be evident (other than by empirical x-rays) early on, or maybe NOT evident until they were older? Is there any point that you would be able to feel comfortable that it won't be an issue?
And what are the signs and symptoms of it? Are there any prodromal signs that you might pick up BEFORE they end up with a painful situation, or is that the first sign you see?
