I do notice at 4am when he starts to bark it is because he has to go outside. I can tell because I let him out and put him outside and he does his thing. Then when he is done I put him back in the crate and he settles down until we are ready to wake up.

How can I ensure he is calm when I come to the crate? As soon as he hears me he goes crazy to get out.

I know I have to let him out at this time as well. Should I maybe time it so I let him out an hour before while he is calm?
