My 2 year old, Merlot has done this before. It scared me at first, so I called the Vet. I used to call everytime he did something out of the ordinary, but now I know from experience to keep an eye on him and make sure he doesn't start choking. If he vomits again or continues the dry heaving I would give your vet a call.
By the way. We just moved from McGrath, AK in April! I miss it, but I'm sure Merlot is alot happier here. He got frostbite on his ears last winter.
