Hmmm...Max's toys (his fleecy type ones) are kind of like that....I just figured it was normal, either being wet from him chewing on them and just residue maybe from his food ?....I throw them into the washing machine on gentle, into the dryer and they're fine. I think I'd start with the brushing as early as possible...even if you're not actually brushing....at least get him used to having your fingers in his mouth so it will be simpler a little later on.
