I think that decision is made jointly by the vet, the surgeon and the owner. Gracie was a good candidate for bilateral surgery. While one at a time might have been easier on her functionally, it would have meant 8-12 weeks crate confinement rather than 4-6. I can work from home for one month, but not 2 or three. Also, doing both at once means one less surgery, so less risk with the repeated anesthesia etc. It is also a bit less expensive doing both at once.
