I know when my son made the decision to leave his lab, with us it broke both their hearts, she was always with him and went to pet smarts once a week for a new toy, she was his running partner, at that time she was a 1 yr old.

But when he started flight school for the marines, his days started at 5 am and ended at 7p.m. all his time was study and flight training, so Millie was left on her own, no more dog parks, pet smart, or running, so we took her until he was able to take her back, well thats been 4 yrs now and millie is still with us, not because he doesn't want her but because he flying all the time now, but they still have their bond, when he was home for christmas she was his dog his shadow, he was hoping to take her back christmas as he is station in NC now, but 2 days before he left to come home he found out he would be back overseas for 6mos and home 6mos for the next two years.
I guess what I am saying is Millie will always be his dog, she happy with us but she would be happier with him and when and if the time comes that he can take her back I will he happy for both of them, but I will miss her too.
