Get your grandfather a trainer.

You can hire a behaviorist for your dog for $200 an hour. And the behaviorist is capable of treating abnormal behavior. But biting someone who throws things at you and spanks you is not abnormal behavior. It's self-defense. There's nothing "weird" about it.

It's an impossible situation as long as your grandfather is behaving like that.
