I don't know if this is a good idea or a bad one, so ASK the med student before you try it. I would worry about an allergic reaction or something.
Anyway, when my son broke his arm and his cast got smelly, the doc suggested a fabric dryer sheet slipped into the cast. We chose one that had a baking soda scent and no artificial dyes, etc...
Just ask, you never know.
Also, you might try putting another smell into the equation...for example, put some vicks vapor rub just under your nose. Maybe that will cover the smell long enough for him to hug and kiss him.
