I got one response from the list (so far), and this is it:

When thinking on this, I figure that the mother eats the placenta as part of her clean-up process, so as not to attract scavengers. ??? For my thoughts, there are too many other sources than to go with this - even if someone I trusted told me it's OK! I mean, I can barely feed green tripe. That's some naaaaaaaaasty smelling stuff!
