Black and itchy could be mites
Black and sour smelling could be infection
Brown and maybe sweet smelling could be yeast infection
The vet will probably do a cytology and give you otomax. I would recommend going that way but I have seen a product online called Zymox that you could try if you're sure it isn't mites. Of course it is always better to see a vet.
