well for us it took a while. We got Ruby last April and she was 12 weeks old and we potty trained consistently and then in October she started to ring a bell I have hanging by a ribbon on the door we always use. We don't have to watch her and hound her about going to the bathroom just take her when she is at the door ringing the bell. During the day she stays in a gated area of my kitchen and has a pee pad that she uses maybe 1 out of 5 days. It is a long process though. A lot tougher than potty training a child that's for sure!
