I've tried every kind of collar (yes, for tags/bell only) for Marcel: flat leather, rolled leather, canvas, silk - and he always mats at his neck around the collar area.

Anyone have anything else I might try to avoid this? I hate having to put him through the de-matting, but he really must wear a bell (and tags) and collar.
