I really think they can understand what you are saying.
My daughter and I were with my cat named Alley. I told my daughter that Alley looks a little dirty. Immediately, Alley's tail went down like she was sad, she walked away and started cleaning herself.
I didn't mean to hurt her feelings but I did.
