I'm pretty near you too....and the same thing almost happened at my friends' house when Max and his sister were really little. His sister was about half his size (he's 5 lbs, she's about maybe 3 1/2) and they've got basically, a huge zoo of bird aviaries in their back yard with a one hole golf course....the dogs love to race around on the green area and then down into the sand trap and out again....but my friend went to do something that involved going out toward the dogs and a hawk swooped down RIGHT IN FRONT OF HER.....going for Max's sissy . My friend was able to grab the little girl before the hawk did, but that bird had NO FEAR of my friend whatsoever. When a hawk zeroes in on it's prey, they don't even see anything else!
I'm a HUGE bird lover, but I've had hawks try to grab some of my doves THRU the cage and actually divebombed them and injured one in the chest with his talons, so you can NEVER be too careful. Even if they don't actually pick them up and take them away, they can really injure them with those sharp claws and beak! Please be careful...I'm so glad that you were right there and had the broom! And if you DO kill it, don't tell anyone .
