Maybe a crate might be a good idea, I have a small one that can collapse for storage or travel, I line the bottom with a puppy pad, put her bed and a couple of toys in there and her water bowl, she sleeps in this at night and will get in by herself when she's tired, its her safe haven, her den, and i cover it with a blanket at night too so its nice and cosy. She feels cosy and safe in there at bedtimes or when we are at work, it works for us! and it would be peace of mind for you too when you are not able to watch him, at least you know he is not chewing something he shouldn't!
Your pup will get used to being left, maybe a heat pad under his bed, and a radio switched on while you are out?
