Personally, I think you were right, I wouldn't leave a young pup alone for hours and hours a day, day in day out, I think it's so sad for the pup, these dogs crave human company and that of their own, now if the pup would have another yorkie to keep him/her company then its not so bad. I'm out of the house 4 hours a day, I work 10am-2pm so i have the morning to spend with Pixie (my yorkie) and Bruce (my staffy) and the rest of the afternoon and evening. I wouldn't take on full time work because of my dogs, but i understand that most of us have to work full time and if you have a dog you should make other arrangements for their quality of life. The pup is your baby, you have every right to make the descision on the type of home you want for him/her.
