I keep them in, BUT, I take them out a few times a day to brush the hair... After I brush it, it goes back up. I usually loosen it a bit too so that its not pulling too hard, but just enough to keep all the hair up... she pulls them out within a few hours, or minutes, anyways. lol...

Great thread! I was actually wondering the same thing myself. Cooper has had goopey eyes and the vet says he may have pink eye (which is funny because I am a kindergarten teacher and get pink eye constantly). She said it is was from the hair in his eyes. His hair is a little too short for a top knot, although I ALMOST got it up last night.
I may just keep it short up top, if it becomes a problem.
