1) Sadie was a Christmas present to me three years ago. She is the best thing that has ever happened to me. She came into my life at a wonderful time and while it hasn't always been easy (is it ever with a puppy?) I have no regrets & love her more than ANYTHING.

2) I just got my parents a puppy for Christmas. THey lost their dog two years ago & were ready for another one. I did the research & found a good breeder & a good puppy. My parents couldn't be happier. My mom says my dad is just in love with her, and I know she is too. And yes, they're going through that rough puppy stage (training, chewing, etc.) but they know they will make it through.

I say all of this to say that I don't think it's fair to generalize and say that it is always a bad idea to give one as a Christmas gift. Sometimes it's just the right thing at just the right time. I agree that for some people it is not a good idea (like for the guy you know), but for some people, it's the perfect thing. I think it just depends on the situation and the people involved.
In the instances you purchased your pups that is fine. What I wanted to convey was the oooh lookie impulse shoppers that buy them as a cute xmas gift without giving any thought or research into the breed or it's needs before just buying one.
