I learned to knit first- when I was about 11 or so. I taught myself how to crochet two years ago, when I was 20. Crocheting was easier to pick up but I think that was because I had already learned how to work with tension and slack in the yarn through knitting. Once you master the yarn (tension-wise) I think you can learn to do both quite quickly, regardless of which one you learned first.
