I know what I do is take the cord about a 1/2 an inch from where it's attached to the puppy and make sure your hands are sterile and use your finger nails to scratch the cord and hold on to the cord on the other end as to not let it go back into the mom. Make sure you have idione to put on the umblicacord. Scraping with your finger nails is like the mothers teeth and if you aren't sure she expelled the placenta when all is done take her to the vet and get a pop shot. I know others clamp the cord but I've always helped by scraping the cord with my fingernails with no problems. I've never used the hemostats but I know other breeders do so I'm telling you what I do but make sure your hands are sterile
