Tatum's hair is really soft but we've had problems with breakage also. I noticed this after we got Stormie (our Aust. Shep.). They play so hard outside that I think it just gets rubbed on too much. For this reason, Tatum doesn't wear a topknot on a daily basis anymore. I only put one in if we go somewhere or have company to primp for which isn't all that often. I would just let him go without a topknot for a while - hopefully the hair will grow out again.
