I know it's hard to deal with crying babies, especially when we need our sleep so badly.

Just try to remember that he's in a new place. I put both our puppies in their crate by my bed, either on the nightstand or a barstool, and when they started to whine I put my fingers in the crate. That calmed both of them down. It will take several nights before your baby is truly comfortable in his new environment, but in my experience, each successive night gets a little bit easier.
