I crate Sophie of a night because she is the worst bed fellow ever but when I leave I put her in one room and close the door. She uses the pee pad every time but if I let her have free run of the house she will have accidents. It is a small room and I think that helps. We leave the tv on and lots of toys and water. She does very well. She hates when we leave but is used to the routine. I used to use gates in front of the door but she could get out no matter what so we have to shut the door. I would try a bathroom or kitchen. Somewhere with hard floors. Good luck.
