My philosophy on training in general (and potty training in particular) is that the more work you put into the first 6 MONTHS or so, the more stress-free and pleasurable YEARS you will have! It's like having a child that takes near constant attention. That's why you need to be really ready for a puppy (physically and emotionally). Coby is going on 11 months old and still doesn't have free run of the house. We are still training. But the focus and attention I put into it for the first several months is paying off. My Reggie is 10 years old and an absolute joy to live with most days. He and I are both so well trained. Coby and I are working on it still.
