Cry On the freeway today

I saw a dead dog who had evidently been hit by a vehicle. It was so sad. A medium-sized shorthaired white dog - I was going by at like 55 or so, but I think it had a collar on. I was sick about it. I called 911 right away, but they already knew and were trying to get someone there .

After I hung up the phone, I wish I had asked if they check for microchips after picking up an animal, so the owners could be notified. Does anyone know anything about how police or the city might try to let owners know? It just saddens me that someone may never know what happened to their dear dog. Especially it could be an elderly person without the resources to track their dog down.
