I am no expert, but Lola was the first female dog I had ever had. I did some research on heat cycles and spaying because she is a tiny girl and I was really worried about her having the surgery. Lola is currently 2.9 pounds and is 22 months, but she is spayed and was 16 months when she was spayed...and it was 6 weeks after her first cycle.
One: Lola's "private" area was very swollen when she did go into heat, and there was blood, albeit a very small amount, but there was blood on her privates as well as watery, thin blood on her blanket when we first noticed it. This was the beginning of her heat cycle...and later the blood was less watery.
Two:You are correct about the risks of cancer, but if your baby is in heat, it is difficult for the vet to preform the surgery, and more risky for your baby. We wanted to wait as well, hoping Lola would gain some more weight...and she went into heat, but it didn't happen like that for us. So, we had to wait six weeks after she went into heat to have the surgery..which we did and she was about 2.75 pounds at the time.
Three and Four:I can only assume dogs are all a bit different at this time. Lola became a bit more aggressive (she started to hump my male dog). She was a bit more sleepy and constantly wanted to clean her privates. So, from my experience, I learned to buy preemie-onsies, or xxs doggie sanitary pants and make sure was is as clean as possible during the process. There was really only about a teaspoon of blood total during her heat, but it was small drops through out the process. Also, her nipples were ery swollen as well...and I am sure sensitive, so we were careful to handle her and just let her come to us if she wanted to be held.
Lastly, Five: as for baby teeth, I have never seen either of my dogs in pain due to their baby teeth falling out...or for that matter any pets I have ever had. Both of my babies had baby teeth removed during their spay (Lola) and neuter (Tino ) surgeries...and they were back to eating like normal.

Okay two things happened today.......
one, I found a baby tooth in her xpen this evening
and two, when i was tucking her in for bed, i noticed that she was REALLY bloated. And just yesterday i was going through YT threads, i remember seeing somewhere that female pups get very bloated when they go into heat. So i immediately got worried and checked her, and i saw very faint (like VERY faint) traces of blood. Like i cant even be sure because there has been no evidence anywhere else of any blood. Her 'thingy' just had a bit of red rimming it.
So i have a few questions...
one: How can i be sure she has gone into heat?
two: i read somewhere that she can still get spayed...what are your opinions about this... should i wait until its over? or should i have it done. I had really wanted to get her spayed before her first heat as it reduces chances of cancer so im really upset about this.
three: does anyone have any suggestions to help Jaya during this time... i have no clue how to deal with this... ie. should i seperate her from Jenna (3 month old female yorkie) cuz i dont know what jaya's mood will be like and jenna might irritate her.......
four:what should i expect...... how much blood will there be... what will her mood be like...will she be in pain.... is she going to be scared.... what should i do to help her....
five: in regards to her baby teeth falling out.... is it painful for her? will more fall out? should i not give her anything crunchy to eat? I tried looking in her mouth but she would not let me so i dont know if she's in pain or not.
She was playful all day, and then just this evening got a little quiet...
Sorry i probably sound like an idiot, its just that I have no clue about this. I will probably give the vet a call in the morning to ask him too. |
