So he has the run of the apt. while you're gone? Does he have a crate or a small area where he can feel secure? Do you give him a special treat or toy that's only for when you leave? Do you leave any music or tv on?
Mine stay in the kitchen in an x-pen and I keep a radio on a Classical station. When they see me getting my shoes and coat they run into their pen because they know they will get a special treat and certain toys. They are so busy with their treats that they barely hear me leave. When they were younger and cried a bit I would leave a little early and just stand outside at the door to see how long they carried on - I only had to come back in twice to hush them.
