LOTS of patience
All mine I've never cut and its long. Makes it way easier and once its past the "poking in the eye" stage you don't have to mess with it.
I just left it. I'd take my fingers and lay it down and it grows and then will lay down on its own.
It didn't actually poke them in the eye, but it sure looked like it

(I even remember whn I used to go to a groomer and took Brodie for the 1st time and she wanted to cut the eye hair. I was like NO!!!!!! I'm growing it out!!!!)
