The reference range is about 7-27. So that is quite high. It can happen if the dog has eaten a high protein meal or is dehydrated. If neither are the case then there is a problem unless this high level is "normal" for that particular dog. You took your dog in because of pain, right? In that case, with a high BUN I would think they should have done a urinalysis. Then if something still isn't right they would go to an ultrasound.
