With just a few exceptions purebred dogs in our area are running 1,000. or so. These same breeds used to be in the 350-400 dollar range and "mixed" breeds were cheap or free. Now I see mixed breeds who've been giving hyphenated names selling at $500. These are the same ones that used to be free or under 100.00. Personally I wouldn't spend $500.00 on a mixed breed, but that's just me, if you're comfortable with it, then go for it. If I wanted a mixed breed dog, I'd go to the ASPCA or pound, there are plenty of pups there that need love too.
PS. The "best" dog we ever owned was a mixed breed....sheltie and westhighland terrior. She was an absolute joy
