I subscribed for a while to a periodical that had a lot of holistic info in it. One issue covered the way to select a dry food for your dgo. It made sense to me and I still use the info. The first 5 ingredients are usually the ones to judge. Yes, meat such as lamb and chicken are good and should be first but there should be one more protein source in the first five ingredients. Chicken meal, for instance, is chicken with the moisture removed and ounce for ounce, could have more protein that plain chicken because of the concentration of the chicken muscle..So, I look for a food that has 2 protein sources and as much whole grains as possible in the 5 ingredients. That way, I don't have to spend time comparing. I automatically rule out foods based on the first 5 ingredients..
I tried Flint River and mine turned their snobby noses right up at it. My sons English Spaniel has eaten some really expensive foods based on my research and my brats' tastes..
