I am so sorry to hear this. It is very difficult when older men lose a job they have had for a long time.
This happened to my father-in-law and he couldn't find another job in his area. He ended up driving a school bus and cooking in a day care center. He loved kids and he loved to cook and even though it didn't pay much, he was happy.
Of course, he'd have been happier if he didn't lose his old job, but still, sometimes things just have a way of working out.
My husband became suddenly and unexpectedly unemployed, but it was due to his health. He woke up one morning in heart failure, unable to hardly get from the bed to the chair. It was a huge shock for us, but we got through it somehow. He is medically retired now, but we were unexpectedly without his income for almost a year before his retirement went through. It is tough, but they can get through it.
I feel so sorry for older people (men and women) when they lose a long term job - it is not easy to job hunt or try to do something different.
I bet your dad can get another job in his area - it won't be easy - but I wish him all the luck in the world!
