We have four doggies and have it fenced off so that they can only go about 10 feet outside the door. It works out good so they can potty outside safely under the patio. It would be better if they could go in the yard but it is not safe unless I am home to watch them.
Years ago, my daughter had a cat that learned to use the doggie door on her own. We never taught her. Unfortunately, she went out and never made it back.
I think the doggie door is fine for the bigger dogs but for the small ones they should be supervised. There are just too many things that can happen.
