The pop shot is a clean out shot, if you have any doubt about a remaining placenta even just a piece can create havoc and cause a major infection in the mom...better to be on the safe side...also the length of the tail is about 1/4" above the brown...

that would be perfect length.I had mine docked 1/4 into the black and they are too long looks like the whole tail so 1/4 above the brown would be the way to go
