Ya know....I've never let my dogs out when i am not home either. I do live on a dead-end dirt road though, with only 6 houses on my block. I don't really think the yorkies will STAY out as long as my Sheltie would. I think they would just go potty, and come back in....maybe stay out for 10 to 15 min, as that is the only amount of time they usually like to spend outside anyways. I would not allow them access to outside at night, just during day time hours, and I COULD build a smaller yard for them, instead of giving them access to 1/2 the yard. Are you afraid of someone taking them? If I built a smaller yard, within the bigger yard, it would be towards the back of my house, and it would be DOUBLE fenced, because I currently have a fence on my acre, and then it would be a smaller fenced area, I don't think anyone would even SEE my dogs.
