I had a doggy dog going from my backyard to my garage for my big dogs. The garage was heated and they had a couch in there to lay on. They would go in the garage to dry off before coming into the house. I never had a problem with other animals using in (skunks, mice, etc.) I have thought of putting one in my new house but like you, I worry that they will go out in the snow and rain and come back in all wet and muddy. I am still considering it, if I can figure out a way to block off a portion for them to stay in immediately after coming in.
