When Gracie was a little puppy, I put her in a small kennel/cat carrier on my bed. Once she was potty trained and old enough to get on and off the bed and take herself potty, she earned the right to sleep in bed with me. I think we only had one or two accidents. When she peed on the bed, back in the carrier she went. I'm doing the same thing with Holly. They won't cry at night if they are with you. Another option would be to get a dog bed with a heart beat in it. It reminds them of snuggling up next to their dog mom.
