BamaFan121s is right on the reason for the shot for mama right after whelping. If you are positive there were no retained placentas then there really is no need for it. As far as the tail docking and removal of dew claws....that is not done the day after their birth. It is normally done 3-5 days after they are born. As far as the length...I've read to have it cut 1/4" into the black for the perfect length.
