I usually change them daily. How many you get depends on how often you want to do wash and how big your washer is. When washing them you want your washer to be no more than about 85% full. That way there is plenty of room for them to move around and get clean. I have never had an lingering odors in my machine or anything like that.
Another thing I do when I put them in the washer is I put them so the soiled side is facing out rather than the waterproof side. That way I figure the water goes out from the pad in the spin cycle rather than stopping at the waterproof barrier. I am not sure if it makes a difference, but that's how I do it.
