A POP shot causes the female to expel any afterbirth that she may have retained during the whelp. Females still contract to push this out after the birth of the pups. Many times after the birth of the last pup, the contractions cease and the female may retain it. A retained placenta will easily cause a serious infection.
You will find mixed opinions on if the shot is needed or not. I personally have never had it given to my females. I kept track and made sure that all afterbirth was passed. However, I also had our vet come w/ sonar to examine shortly after whelp and she felt certain that there was no need for one.
I have to be honest and say that I would heed the advice of some of the other breeders more experienced than myself in regards to this one. It's an aspect I am still rather sketchy and unsure of. |
