Before you panic and send him to the university for an ultrasound, your vet needs to do a Protein C test. It is a very simple test that is sent to Cornell for evaluation. You will have the results the next day. Dr. Sharon Center is considered to be the expert in liver disease in dogs.

The Protein C test was also used to diagnose dogs who were poisoned by toxic pet food in the recall. Here is an article about the test and Dr. Center:
