Thanks for your reply and for the good wishes and recommendations. A very happy New Year to you, too.
I am going to try the Pantene conditioner first and see if this helps. I am using a very nice aloe vera puppy shampoo at the moment. It is a store brand but seems to be good quality, so I will try the conditioner with it and see if it reduces the mats or even solves the problem.
