I keep my four month old yorkie in an xpen that is close to me when I can't comepletly watch him. My four year old is not allowed to get him out and play with him unless I am around to supervise. They still get plenty of playtime together though. Their favorite is watching cartoons together while snuggling under a blanket. Like your child, my daughter thinks he is a live stuffed animal that she can play with and dress-up. Hence the constant supervision and strict rules!
